5 Books That Will Ignite A Man’s Soul

IMG_1717When is the last time you felt deeply inspired? Can you remember when the mention of the word “spiritual” or “Jesus” wasn’t accompanied by memories of religious dysfunction, judgement or guilt? Is your heart alive? Do you feel like you’re dying a slow death spiritually?

I’ve been there too. I’ve read a lot of books, prayed a lot of prayers and talked to a lot of people to try to shake out of my funk. I realized that If I was going to live my life to the fullest, I had to expand my mind spiritually.

The following 5 books have helped me blow off the self-limiting mind lid that has held me back for decades. There are thousands of books in many different categories that will expand your knowledge and add to your success. The following books deal specifically with matters of the heart.

1. Wild At Heart by John Eldredge

What makes a man come alive?  It’s not being practical, singing songs in church and it’s certainly not training yourself to be “a nice man.”  So what it is?  John talks about the core desires of a man’s heart and how to get in touch with them.  Battle, adventure and beauty.  This book is a staple for any man that wants to shake off the chains of religion and pursue the real desires that God put in his heart.

2. Love Does by Bob Goff

Bob Goff is a living example of what it means to enjoy life.  He doesn’t give you lists of tips and practical techniques.  He lives with reckless abandon and is left with amazing stories to tell.  He causes mischief, loves when love is totally unexpected and somehow finds the joy in every situation.  Love Does rocked my world.  It helped me cast my fears aside and get more out of life.  Read more about how Bob changed my life here: Bob Goff Story

3. A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller

After Donald Miller agreed to do a movie about his life, the writers suggested that they change the stories to make it more interesting.  His life was boring.  This book is about how Donald set out to live a life worth talking about.  He road his bicycle across the country, climbed a mountain in South America and never turned back.  Miller is an incredibly talented writer and his transformation will inspire you to start living your life like a story worth telling.

4. The Traveler’s Gift by Andy Andrews

David Ponder is a normal guy with an amazing opportunity.  He lost his job, his marriage is in jeopardy and he is considering throwing away the greatest gift he’s ever been given, his life.  He meets seven different people who share with him seven different pieces of wisdom that will change his life forever. Andy Andrews is hired by many of the worlds top CEO’s and Professional Coaches.  These seven decisions , as he calls them, will give you the ability to take control of your life and reach heights you never thought possible.

5. Beautiful Outlaw by John Eldredge

We’ve all seen the colorful painting hung in churches of a Caucasian, feminine, mysterious ghostly man with long hair.  Is it Richard Gear? Fabio?  It can’t be Jesus, wasn’t he from Israel? Somehow, through religious tradition, western manipulation and hallmark; the true identity of Jesus has been lost. Eldredge removes the religious fluff and takes a fresh look at who Jesus really is.  This book helped see Jesus as someone I want to follow rather than someone I’m supposed to follow.

Are You “Playing Not To Lose”?

“If we can just survive this quarter without losing money, we’ll be golden.” “I’ll be happy if we can just make it through this conference.” “What can we do to make sure we don’t lose our best client this year?”

Although intended to preserve your organization, statements like these will almost certainly lead to failure or average results at best. In a recent coaching session with one of my clients, we addressed this very subject. He leads a progressive urban elementary school. As you can imagine, he faces his fair share of challenges.

What is his big goal? “If we can just get enough of our students to pass the state tests, we can stay open.” Sounds honorable and reasonable enough. I dug deeper. I asked him what would happen if the school closed. “Our teachers would be unemployed and our kids wouldn’t have a fair shot at a good education.”

Although it was a worthy goal to pursue, he was, “playing not to lose.” If he reached his goal, the best possible result was to stay open. We began to talk about what “playing to win,” could look like. What if your school set it’s sights on becoming “the model” for urban schools? What if every decision the staff made was based on that filter? What would the most effective school in this city do in this situation? How would that change the way teachers prepared? How would it change the way students believe in themselves?

What about you, leaders? Are you playing “not to lose.” When “not losing” is your goal, your results will be average at best. Strive to be excellent, to be the best at what you do. Play to win!

Two Ways to Accelerate Personal Growth

IMG_1717In the distinguished words of Big Tom Callahan from the movie Tommy Boy, “In auto parts, you’re either growing or you’re dying. There ain’t no third direction!”

If we aren’t consistently growing, we can very quickly become stagnant and lose heart. Whether you’re the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, a father of three or part of a team at work;  you’re thirst for learning and growth will dramatically affect where you end up in life.  So what is the difference maker?  Why do some become great and others remain average?

“You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.”-Charlie “Tremendous” Jones

For the past year, I have put this statement to the test and guess what, it works!  I have intentionally sought out people who I respect and admire and made it a point to connect with them regularly.  I have read at least one book a month and enjoy reading on a daily basis.  So what has changed in my life since then?

  • I’ve completed my certification as a life and business coach.
  • I started a successful coaching practice in which I help men become dynamic selfless leaders in their families, careers and communities.
  • I’ve eliminated all debts except my home mortgage.
  • I married the woman of my dreams and our first baby is due this month.
  • I’m 80% finished with my first book.
  • I am enjoying life more than I ever have before.

Many other things in my personal, emotional and spiritual life have changed for the better as well.  I’m pretty amazed at how my life has changed but I’m even more amazed at the way my thinking has changed.  Especially since my past would suggest that I didn’t have the brightest future.

1. Reading

I have always struggled as a reader.  I remember my father promising to buy me a brand new fishing pole if I read a book one summer in high school.  One book in an entire summer!  I couldn’t bring myself to do it.  I still struggle to sit in one place and read for extended periods of time.  Audio books have become my saving grace.  I can listen to an entire book in one week while I exercise.  I have gone through dozens of books this past year.  Each one expands my knowledge and growth in different ways. Audio books are the key if you struggle to find the time or inspiration to read.

2. People

I get it. Between work, exercise, family, rest and a little bit fun, there isn’t much time to spend with other people, especially strangers.  But we need to expand our bubbles.  If we spend time with the same people over and over, we will remain the same.  We need to expand our perspectives.  We need to be challenged by the views of those different than us.

There’s a magical time between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm where this activity fits perfectly.  If you knew it would change your life, would you set aside 45 minutes a couple times a week to eat lunch with someone?  I’ve made it my goal to never eat lunch alone.  I have been able to offer and receive more opportunities in one year than I could in a lifetime on social media.  There is something special about a face to face meeting.

If you want have lunch with me, email me at Michael@berealmen.com, I would love to expand my perspective!
